Heavy rainfall in North Karnataka
After a strong start to the southwest monsoon in May in Karnataka, the pace slowed own. However, a few active pockets in north Karnataka witnessed a return of rain after a week-long lull. These rain spells left a trail of flooding and damage in several districts including Dharwad, Belagavi, Gadag, Koppal, and Raichur.Streets flooded, homes inundated
A heavy downpour for 40 minutes in Dharwad on Sunday led to streets being waterlogged and homes flooded. Rainwater mixed with sewage water entered houses, forcing residents to spend hours clearing the mess. Traffic came to a halt at several localities and motorists were seen pushing their vehicles through flooded stretches while pedestrians waded through ankle-deep water. In Belagavi district's Saundatti taluk, Saturday evening’s heavy downpour flooded over 10 homes and damaged belongings.
In Gadag district, a quick spell of rain flooded the premises of the government primary school and left several homes near the Someshwar temple inundated. The Pala-Badami state highway was under water near Gadag Naka, disrupting traffic for more than an hour
Further east, a makeshift bridge built across a stream at Jagir Venkatapur in Raichur taluk was washed away on Saturday evening, cutting off access to the village.
Raichur town and surrounding areas saw intense showers that cooled the heat but caused temporary disruption.
